Port Allen

Port Allen, Louisiana, is the parish seat of West Baton Rouge Parish. Port Allen is a community with about 5,300 residents situated on the west bank of the Mississippi River. The city is located between U.S. Highway 190 and Interstate 10 about nine miles west of Baton Rouge. The deep water port here is one of the top ten ports in the United States.

History

Port Allen was first settled in 1809, although it was called St. Michel until 1878. At that time, the community was named after General Henry Watkins Allen, the last Confederate governor of Louisiana. Port Allen was first incorporated as a village in 1916.

The 6,000-acre Lake Fausse Pointe State Park offers extensive recreational opportunities. Kids enjoy a both a splash park and a playground. In the kids section is the Delta Crop Duster, a ride in a bi-plane that travels up and down. On Gasoline Alley, children can "drive" Model T cars.
